What Renters Need to Know About Water Filtration

Apartment dwellers face a specific challenge: most landlords won't allow plumbing modifications, but you still want better water than what comes out of the tap. Here's how to evaluate options that work in rental situations.

What's allowed in most leases

Generally permitted: pitcher filters, countertop systems with diverter valves (which clamp on without modification), under-sink filters that connect via saddle valves or push-fit T-fittings (no drilling required, fully reversible), and faucet-mount filters. Generally NOT allowed without explicit landlord permission: drilling holes for dedicated filter faucets, hard-plumbed installations, modifying the main water line.

Pitcher vs. countertop vs. faucet-mount for renters

Pitcher filters are the most foolproof: zero installation, easy to take with you, lowest upfront cost. The downsides are limited capacity (you'll be refilling constantly for a household of 3+), shorter filter life, and some pitchers don't address heavy metals or PFAS. Countertop filters give you significantly more capacity and broader filtration, with no permanent install. Faucet-mount filters are the cheapest option that filters all your tap water (not just water you remember to put in a pitcher) — but they reduce flow noticeably and not all faucet styles are compatible.

Reversible under-sink installs

If you're willing to do a small DIY install that's fully reversible, an under-sink filter using a push-fit T-fitting on the cold supply line is the renter sweet spot. You don't drill anything, the T-fitting comes off cleanly when you move, and you get genuine under-sink filtration performance. Use the existing sprayer hole or sink-top lever hole for the dedicated faucet so you're not modifying the countertop. Take a photo of the original setup before you start.

Moving with your filter

If you're likely to move within a year or two, factor portability into the decision. Pitchers and countertop systems pack up in minutes. Faucet-mount filters come off easily. Under-sink systems with quick-connect fittings can be removed in 15 minutes. Hard-plumbed filters (especially RO with permanent connections) are a hassle to relocate; pick those only if you're settled.

Shower filtration for renters

Shower filters are universally renter-friendly — they screw between the existing shower arm and showerhead with no plumbing changes. If you have city water with heavy chlorine and you're noticing skin or hair effects, this is one of the cheapest, easiest improvements you can make in a rental.
